BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Until the born of multiapplication smartcards, each smartcard used a proprietary operating system over an specific manufacturer chip. Java Card technology enables the development of applications independently of the underlying hardware, as the standard Java developed by Sun Microsystems does. This new technology also offers the possibility of loading and use multiple applications in the same card.
In the Universitiy of Cantabria the smartcards used by the students and university workers uses a WG10 OS. The OTTIUC, due to the close in time migration to multiapplication smartcard within the university , develops an applet that mimics the behaviour of a native WG10 smartcard over a Java Card platform. This way multiaplication smartcards are distributed transparently to the users in WG10 based environments.
