BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
The characteristics of reliability and robustness make the smart card the ideal support for storing limited quantities of information in a secure and portable way.
The OTTIUC in collaboration with the Department of Health of the Regional Government of Cantabria and Santander Central Hispano, carry out this project in which the smart card acts as a portable information system, storing an reduced, updated clinical history ( Vital information report ) with the user's most relevant data, such as allergies, chronic episodes, active treatments, contact person .etc. This information is stored in such a way that it can be consulted rapidly and efficiently by the authorised healthcare worker, respecting the aspects related to confidentiality and data protection.
To cover all the possible situations where access to this vital information is necessary two types of device have been considered: portable devices, such as a PDA, used by the emergency services outside the hospital whose principal functionality will be reading data, and devices connected to the health service net, for instance, first aid posts and hospitals, where not only reading is contemplated but also updating of these data..
The card will also provide support for electronic signing facilities, permitting the exchange of electronic documents among health service workers while guaranteeing the authenticity, privacy and integrity of the information.
