 GENERAL INFORMATION

Name:
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
Degree:
Telecommunication Engineering. 2nd Cyle. Optional.
Professor(s):
Roberto Sanz Gil.
Timetable:
2nd Semester.
THEORY CLASSES:
    Monday (11:30 - 12:30)
    Tuesday (11:30 - 12:30)
    Wednesday (11:30 - 12:30)
PRACTICAL CLASSES:
    In the afternoon (unspecified yet).
 OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this subject is to acquire the knowledge of the technological and theoretical basis of the ISDN, introducing the involved protocols for data and voice transmission over this kind of networks. As well, a study of the Signalling System Nº7 focused towards the ISDN case is carried out.

 SYLLABUS
  Lesson I: Introduction.

The Integrated Digital Network. Digital transmission review. Switching network structures. Space and time switching. Circuit switching. Packet switching. Comparison with circuit switching. Internal routing principles. Routing techniques. Congestion control. Error control. The X.25 protocol. Character-based terminals access.

  Lesson II: ISDN Reference Configuration.

SAN reference configuration. Functional groups classification and description. Reference points classification and description. User-network interface. IEN reference configuration. ISDN connections reference configurations. Types of connections.

  Lesson III: ISDN Protocol Architecture.

ISDN protocol architecture. Physical layer (I.430): cabling, frame format, access control. Link layer (I.441/Q.921): frame format, LAPD protocol, link layer primitives. Network layer (I.451/Q.931): message format, protocol for opening, control and closing of connections.
