 OBJECTIVES

After an in-depth introduction to communication network concepts, circuit switching and packet switching, we study circuit switching dimensioning techniques, introducing traffic concepts. This is complemented with wireless communications networks dimensioning.

 SYLLABUS
  Lesson I: Introduction.

Teleservice and bearer services. Topologies. Basic and complementary telephone network: exchange types. Fixed and access networks. Routing. International organizations. Multiplex. Switching modes: circuit, message and packet switching. Open architecture. OSI protocol stack description. Application to packet switching.

  Lesson II: Tele-traffic.

Traffic concepts and queuing theory. Offered, carried and lost traffic. Time and call congestion. Kendall notation. Little formula. Lost systems. Waiting systems. Application to system dimensioning.

  Lesson III: Switching Networks.

Internal structure. Total accessibility networks and non-blocking networks. Cross points calculus. Stage decomposition. Clos networks. Cross points reduction: blocking probability calculus. Serial-parallel decomposition. Lee approximation. Application to digital systems. Spatial switching. Time switching. Switcher design and deployment.

  Lesson IV: Routing Techniques.

Virtual circuits and datagrams. Routing algorithms. Optimum principle. Shortest path routing. Flooding. Distance vector based routing. Link state routing.

  Lesson V: Cellular Telephone Networks.

Historical antecedents. Cellular paradigm evolution. Cellular deployment: Cellular geometry properties. Co-channel interference. Dimensioning. Cellular control architecture.

 EVALUATION CRITERIA
